Title

Heritage Weekend 2009 Foodways Sound Bites

Subject

Foodways and traditions in Lakeland

Description

The sound bites were recorded during the Foodways session of the 2009 Lakeland Heritage weekend. Lakeland residents share stories about the food traditions and customs that they experienced while growing up in the Lakeland community. The stories range from “gathering different fruits to make jams” to “BBQs” on an open pit. The Lakelanders did not have a lot of resources available to them, so they had to survive on what their families were able to grow as farmers. These traditions were essential to the community because they made it necessary for the community members to support one another and forced everyone to grow closer.
