Description

Aline Black was a teacher in Norfolk, VA and petitioned the school board for equal pay for black teachers. Although Thurgood Marshall took her case, Ms. Black lost her job. She began a PhD at NYU; the 1940 census has her listed as living in Harlem with Alfred and Dorothy Hicks. After taking her case to the Supreme Court--where it lost, although the city eventually agreed to pay raises over a three year period--Ms. Black was rehired by the Norfolk School Board in 1941.

Ms. Black purchased 5001 Lakeland Road (Block 4 Lot 10) from Mrs. Carrie Guss in October 1944. In 1952, she added her brothers Harrell and Charles Black to the deed. Ms. Black married Frank A. Hicks during WWII and they had one daughter. Based upon the research I've conducted, Ms. Black and her husband never lived in Lakeland. Her reasoning for purchasing the property in Lakeland is not known.
