Description

Over the past 90 years, many Lakelanders have been employed at the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center, known to many locals as the government farm. In 1910, the U.S. Department of Agriculture purchased the 475-acre Walnut Grange plantation in nearby Beltsville and established a research facility. The Beltsville Agricultural Research Center would eventually expand to 1,662 acres, and become the world's largest, most diversified agricultural research complex. (Courtesy of Leonard Smith)
