Description
For more than 30 years, the first school attended by most Lakelanders was Lakeland Elementary School on Winnipeg Street. It had two classrooms heated by a potbelly stove and an outhouse near the building. In 1944, the primary class, grades one through three(in the photo), were taught by Margret Wills in one classroom; and the upper class, grades four through six, were taught by Miss Smith in the second classroom. Lakelander, Bessie Mack often acted as a substitute teacher at the school. (Courtesy of Leonard Smith)
